About our gutter survey in Terrick
A gutter needs a steady fall towards its outlet to drain properly. Sagging brackets and slipped joints leave water standing and overflowing where the gutter dips. We check the line of each run as far as we can see it, along with the brackets and downpipe fixings. You get written recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. Common reasons to book are gutters full of debris and silt and blocked outlets and hoppers, across outlets and hoppers, downpipes and eaves gutters.
Older buildings in small places like Terrick may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

What you can safely check yourself
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.
Terrick: your questions answered
Do you cover smaller places like Terrick?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.
Is my home in Terrick listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
How much time does the visit need?
For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.
How much is a gutter survey?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The size of the property and the access affect the price. To get a price, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No. We don’t test for asbestos. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.
What we do, step by step
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Older rural homes like those around Terrick can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Getting ready for the survey
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Find any records of previous roof work
How to book
Once you know what you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.

What a gutter survey looks like in Terrick
Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Buckinghamshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
If you own a rental within reach of Little Kimble station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. If you run a business near Friars Square, a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks.

What we look for on each type of roof
Cast iron gutters
Cracks often open on the back of cast iron downpipes, so we look closely at the walls around them.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Aluminium and other metal gutters are used on many newer and commercial buildings. Their joints and outlets still need checking.
What we’re asked to look at in Terrick
A good many tiled and slate roofs carry moss, and rain washes it down into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that holds water in the gutter and lets weeds take root.
Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter and St Paul, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
