Gutter surveys for Upperton homes and businesses

Practical tips

Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:

  • Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees
  • Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters
  • Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
  • Check for spilling water in a downpour

Report times depend on the package you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. It’s sent to you by email as soon as it’s ready.

Have overhanging branches and climbing plants cut back from the roof by someone who can do it safely. Less debris means fewer blocked outlets.

How a gutter survey works in Upperton

Owners get in touch after seeing an overflow, finding damp or planning ahead for winter. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. Whoever books, we inspect and report in the same way with photos and clear recommendations. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. If you’re worried about gutters overflowing in heavy rain and dripping or leaking gutter joints, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

In a smaller place like Upperton, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. On older homes, chimney stacks, valleys and gutters are normally where the work is. The fixings under an older roof frequently fail before good slates or tiles do.

If any part of the gutter couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

What this survey cannot tell you

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Pipes below ground level
  • Hidden sections we can’t view safely
  • Blockages deep inside downpipes

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Fascias and soffits
  • Eaves gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Valley gutters
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers

Leave it or get it looked at?

Overflowing water soaks the walls under the gutter. Given time, it can cause damp patches, damaged pointing and rot in nearby timber. Spotting the problem early tends to mean a simpler fix. Homes in smaller places like Upperton can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Each storm lifts it a little further, and water follows.

Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and the package you choose.

Why us?

Should I look at the roof myself first?

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.

Upperton: your questions answered

Will you come out to Upperton?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Is the coastal weather around Upperton hard on roofs?

Frequently, yes. Within about 1 mile of the sea, as Upperton is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

Are you insured?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and details are available on request.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

You can book at any time of year. Before the wetter months gives you time to plan any work though problems often show up after heavy rain.

Do you look in the roof space?

If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.

Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos testing. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

What affects the cost of gutter surveys

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • How big the roof is
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

Booking your survey

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It’s useful to include:

  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • What made you get in touch
  • The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
  • The address and postcode of the property

Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form to find out.

What happens on the day

Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. Most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. In a smaller place like Upperton, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can often be seen well from the ground, and the loft shows the rest.

  1. We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. We check hidden gutters, such as valleys and parapets, where it’s safe to see them.
  4. Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
  5. You get a written report with photographs and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

What a gutter survey looks like in Upperton

Upperton is within about 1 mile of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. For landlords with property near Eastbourne station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. If you live near a park such as Gildrege Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.
