Is Oliver's Battery within the area you cover?

Yes, Oliver's Battery is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

When should I book new roof snagging?

Once the roofer says the job is done, ideally before you pay in full. That gives time for any snags to be put right.

How much is new roof snagging?

The Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard from £250 and the Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us for a price.

What insurance do you have?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

Do you get involved if the roofer disagrees with the report?

No. Our job is to report on the roof as we find it. A disagreement about the work is between you and them, and the report gives you a clear record to refer to.

New roof snagging for homes and businesses in Oliver's Battery

Replacing a roof costs a lot, so it makes sense to check the work before you pay the final bill. We look for snags, faults and anything left unfinished on the roof and around the property. The findings go into a written report with photos that you can pass to your roofer. We are independent of the roofer who did the job. If you are worried about tiles or slates sitting out of line and missing or blocked roof ventilation, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

In a village or hamlet like Oliver's Battery, homes are frequently older cottages and farmhouses alongside a few newer houses. Village roofs can be clay tile, slate, stone or even thatch on some older buildings. Each covering has its own weak points, whether the roof is old or newly laid. Older roofs may also have old felt underlay or none, and fixings that have done a long stint.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put by urgency where it matters.

New roof snagging around Oliver's Battery

Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whether you’re buying or checking new roofing work, knowing the materials helps make sense of what the inspection finds.

If you live in an older home near Saint Mark's, ask the seller about past roof repairs, because older roofs often have patched valleys, replaced slates and reset ridges.

What we cannot see

Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • Parts of the roof we cannot see safely
  • Deciding who is at fault in a disagreement
  • Nails and clips under the slates or tiles

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Replacement roofs
  • New-build homes
  • Loft conversions and dormers
  • Ridges and verges
  • Flashings and valleys
  • New flat roofs

Can I check my roof myself?

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Different roofs, different checks

Flashings

Poorly finished flashings often show up on new roofs. They’re recorded with photos.

Valleys

We check valley linings for splits and poor laps as far as safe access allows.

What we are asked to look at in Oliver's Battery

Flashings are a common source of snags. Loose or badly fitted flashings can let water in at the first heavy rain.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Loose flashings at walls or chimneys
  • Underlay at the eaves left exposed
  • Gutters blocked by building debris
  • Missing or blocked roof ventilation

If you own a rental within reach of Shawford station, the roof is worth checking before you add another property to a portfolio or pay a roofer in full.

Before booking anyone

  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Their track record with similar roofs

What’s in a roof survey

The survey, step by step

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes between one and two hours for a typical new house roof, longer where the roof is large or complicated. Older rural homes like those around Oliver's Battery can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.

  1. We start by finding out what was replaced and what worries you.
  2. The coverings, ridges, hips and verges are checked as far as can be seen safely.
  3. Valleys, flashings, gutters and the underlay at the eaves are looked at.
  4. We look in the roof space, where there is safe access, and around the property for debris or damage.
  5. We send a written report with photographs of each snag.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Booking a survey

A quick phone call is typically the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
