Common questions in Petersfield
Do you carry out roof surveys in Petersfield?
Yes, Petersfield is within the area we cover. We survey roofs across London and the South East. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details.
Is my home in Petersfield listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We carry out surveys seven days a week. To find a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
Does someone need to be in?
It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed as you book.
How long does the survey visit take?
On site, it usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. The report follows within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
At what stage of buying should I get the roof surveyed?
The sooner after your offer is accepted, the better. You need the report before you exchange, because after that the roof is yours to deal with.
Pre-purchase roof surveys for homes and businesses in Petersfield
A roof report gives you something solid to take back to the seller or the agent. You can ask about the roof’s history, ask for repairs before completion or rethink the price. What the seller agrees to is up to them, but you’ll be negotiating from a clear picture rather than a hunch. It can also help you decide whether the purchase is still right for you. If you are worried about blistered or split felt on a flat roof and gaps where slates or tiles have come loose, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a town like Petersfield, older streets usually sit alongside post-war and newer estates. Older houses often have slate or clay tiles on timbers that have done decades of work, while many later ones have concrete interlocking tiles. For a purchase or a new roof in Petersfield, the type of roof decides where the checks focus. Many older roofs also have felt underlay or none at all, which matters as much as the tiles.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Before and after the survey
Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. A few suggestions:
- Let us know your timetable
- Check the lease for roof repair responsibilities
- Don’t leave it until just before exchange
- Watch for stains or fresh paint on ceilings below the roof
With Standard, you get a follow-up consultation, while Premium includes a consultation in person. Whichever package you choose, you can ask us what a finding means.
Once you’ve moved in, keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, particularly after autumn. Overflowing water is behind a lot of damp. Get a professional in rather than climbing up yourself.
What we cannot see
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Faults hidden behind ceilings, boards or coverings
- Whether timbers meet design loads
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

- Natural slate
- Chimney stacks
- The roof space
- Lead flashings and valleys
- Clay and concrete tiles
- Gutters and downpipes
What we do, step by step
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit normally takes an hour or two at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. A typical visit in Petersfield begins with the street side of the roof and then moves round the building. The back garden is often where extensions, dormers and rear slopes are best seen, so unlocked gates help. Then, if it can be reached safely, we look in the loft.
- You book once your offer is accepted and let us know the address and your timetable.
- We agree a time and how we will get in, including the loft.
- We inspect the roof from ground level, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it’s safe.
- Coverings, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are checked and photographed.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations to read before exchange.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming

Surveys for landlords and agents in Petersfield
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.
With a portfolio of properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To discuss a number of properties, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the addresses.
Why it is worth a survey now in Petersfield
A slow leak can go unnoticed for months. Damp can spread into timbers and ceilings before anyone sees a mark. Spotting it before you buy lets you deal with it as soon as you move in. Blocked gutters and downpipes on homes in Petersfield overflow onto walls. At roof level, a loose tile or tired flashing does the same. Neither gets better on its own.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, including VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

What else we do in Petersfield
Different roofs, different checks
Natural slate
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, yet the nails that fix it frequently give out first. When slates start to slip, corroded nails are frequently the reason.
Gutters and parapets
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter, usually to the back of the house. If yours does, we check that gutter and where it drains.
Petersfield homes and their roofs
If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Historic houses such as Uppark, about 4.1 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Petersfield goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you live in an older home near St Peter's Church, a survey will show how the roof has been repaired before, which helps you judge what’s coming. If you own a rental within reach of Petersfield station, it’s worth knowing a roof’s condition before you buy it, or before you sign off new roofing work on it.
