Roof leak investigations in Longparish: local notes
Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
For landlords with property near Whitchurch (Hampshire) station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Anyone responsible for a site like Longparish Church of England Primary School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.
Longparish is about 5 miles east of Andover, in Hampshire. In Longparish, as across Hampshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire. Southampton is in our area too.

Roof leak investigation in Longparish
Roof leaks rarely show up where you’d expect. It can run along a rafter, a batten or the underlay before it drips, so a ceiling stain is rarely directly below the cause. Our leak investigation traces it back. A repair aimed only at the stain can miss the cause entirely. Finding the route first lets the repair go where it’s needed. Common reasons to book are staining around the chimney inside and wet patches high on an inside wall, across rooflights and dormers, slate and tile slopes and chimney stacks.
Many homes in small places like Longparish face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Before and after the survey
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Mention earlier attempts to fix the leak
- Keep a photo record of the damp patch
Keep the report after the work is done. If the leak returns, it’s a useful record of what was found, which makes the next step quicker.
After a downpour, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. Look for drips, damp patches and stains on timbers. Photograph anything new.
What you can safely check yourself
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Longparish: your questions answered
Is Longparish in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Is Longparish within the area you cover?
Yes, Longparish is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
What’s the best way to book?
To book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and agree a day with you.
Are you insured?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and details are available on request.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only if it is safe. We look at everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the building owner or managing agent. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Do you need a roof leak investigation in Longparish?
Blocked gutters can look like a roof leak. Hidden gutters behind parapets cause the most trouble, because when they block, water backs up and runs inside.
A survey can pick up problems like:
- Leaks below a flat extension roof
- Brown rings on upstairs ceilings
- Stains around a skylight
- Staining where a gutter or parapet meets the wall
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Nicholas, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Whether VAT is added on top
- Their report turnaround times
- What insurance they carry

When you need someone else
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
- Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding
- Leaks that only appear in weather we cannot recreate
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.
What this survey covers
- Flat roof details
- Slate and tile slopes
- Chimney stacks
- Lead flashings
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Rooflights and dormers
- The roof space
How the survey works
We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes an hour or two for most homes, though a hard-to-trace leak can take longer. Around Longparish, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- We start with your notes and photos of the leak.
- We examine the damp area and the rooms near it.
- In the loft, we follow any signs of water back towards the roof.
- Outside, we check flashings, valleys, chimneys, gutters and flat roof details from every safe viewpoint.
- We email a written report showing where the water most likely gets in.
Before the survey
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

Advice
Leave it or get it looked at?
Guesswork repairs are a common reason leaks keep coming back. The real way in may be a metre or more away. We find the probable source before anyone starts work. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
