Chattenden Roof Survey
Wondering about the roof at a property in Chattenden? We carry out roof surveys in Chattenden and across Medway.
- Ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs
- Debris building up in roof valleys
- Gutters that overflow in heavy rain
The survey, step by step
We do not take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. In a hamlet or village like Chattenden, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You get in touch with the address and anything you’ve noticed.
- We agree a date, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- We look at the roof from each safe vantage point, inside and out.
- Every part of the roof is checked and photographed.
- Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.
Preparing for the visit
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Advice
How a roof survey works in Chattenden
Good roofs last decades, but their parts wear at different rates. Slate often lasts a century or more, and tiles commonly half a century, but the fixings and underlay beneath them often give out sooner. We tell you which parts are ageing and which are sound. Knowing that helps you plan work before it becomes urgent. If you’ve noticed crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching and blocked, sagging or leaking gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, on chimney stacks, the roof space and natural slate alike.
Older buildings in small places like Chattenden may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Different roofs, different checks
Lead flashings and valleys
Flashings and valleys are where many leaks start. They get particular attention in every survey.
Natural slate
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, yet the nails holding it often fail long before the slate. We check for slipped, cracked and missing slates.
Common roof problems in Chattenden
Slates and tiles often outlast the fixings that hold them. On slate roofs, corroded nails let slates slip, which is known as ‘nail fatigue’. On tiled roofs, battens and pegs can rot, letting tiles move.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
- Blocked, sagging or leaking gutters
- Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
- Loose chimney pots
The streets around a church such as Bishop Gundulph Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Before booking anyone
- How long the report takes to arrive
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- What experience they bring
Practical tips
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Keep a record of damp patches and dates
- Let us know about past leaks
- Gather any paperwork for past roof work
- Check we can open the loft hatch
We email the report to you. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. Each finding is set out in plain English, with recommendations.
Keep the roof space ventilated. Condensation builds up when air cannot move, which can dampen timbers and insulation over time. Keep insulation clear of eaves vents.

What else we do in Chattenden
Chattenden homes and their roofs
Chattenden lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Chattenden Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. If you run a business near Pentagon Shopping Centre, knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies.

Common questions in Chattenden
Do you cover smaller places like Chattenden?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Can a landlord with a rental near Strood station book a roof survey?
Yes, landlords and letting agents book with us as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details, including who will give access on the day.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
Do I need to be at home?
Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
Do you go up on the roof?
Where it is safe, yes. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the loft space. The Premium Survey adds a drone where it applies.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is frequently shared, so whoever owns or manages the building needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
Can I check my roof myself?
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
