How a roof survey works in Fawley
There are three levels of survey: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, inc. VAT. Basic is a visual inspection with photos and written recommendations. Standard and Premium go further, such as moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging and a drone where applicable. Every package includes a written report. We survey lead flashings, clay and concrete tiles and the roof space, and the problems we are asked to look at most are gaps in the roof where coverings have gone and water stains on rafters and ceiling joists.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are frequently where weather gets in first.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, each with a short note and a photograph. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Tips from our surveys
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Do not climb onto the roof yourself
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Let us know about any leaks or stains you’ve seen
- Include dormers, porches and garages as you book
Your report arrives by email. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. Findings are explained in plain words.
Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Each report gives a record to compare against.
When you need someone else
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- The condition of the rest of the building (that’s a RICS home survey)
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
- Asbestos testing of any kind
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
Roof types and parts we check
- Natural slate
- Lead flashings
- Clay and concrete tiles
- Ridges, hips and valleys
- Flat roofs
- Chimney stacks
- The roof space
What we look for on each type of roof
Lead flashings and valleys
Most leaks begin at a joint rather than the middle of a slope. That’s why we check them closely.
Natural slate
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but its nails often corrode first. Slipped, cracked and missing slates are all noted.

Checking the roof from ground level
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
What we do, step by step
Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. In a hamlet or village like Fawley, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You let us know about the property and any concerns.
- We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
- We look at the roof from every safe vantage point, inside and out.
- Every part of the roof is checked and photographed.
- We email a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Leave it or get it looked at?
Without a survey, you’re guessing at what the roof needs. That can lead to the wrong work being done, or miss the fault that matters. We tell you what’s really needed. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and the package you choose.
Why us?
- Drone and thermal imaging surveys available
- More than 5,000 surveys completed
- Surveys seven days a week
- Insured for professional indemnity and public liability

Questions from Fawley
How do I find out if my home in Fawley is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
I let a flat near Hamble station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We carry out surveys seven days a week. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
Do I need to be at home?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when booking.
How long does the visit take?
It usually takes between one and two hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. The report follows within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Do you work in Fawley?
Yes. We survey roofs in Fawley and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. To book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
What a roof survey looks like in Fawley
Fawley is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
The streets around a church like Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. If you let a flat or house near Hamble station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. Take a building like Fawley Infant School: long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
