Roof survey in Stonehills
We survey roofs in Stonehills and across London and South East England. Visits run seven days a week. We are insured for professional indemnity and public liability, and bring 20+ years’ experience. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or email us. Typical surveys look at worn lead at chimneys and abutments and cracked mortar along the ridge, across the roof space, ridges, hips and valleys and clay and concrete tiles.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

When you need someone else
No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- The condition of the rest of the building (that’s a RICS home survey)

Useful tips for Stonehills property owners
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:
- Do not climb onto the roof yourself
- Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
- Hold on to the report for future surveys
- Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
Where it helps, we say which items are urgent. Some faults need dealing with soon, while others can wait for planned work. That helps you decide what to do first.
Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Each report gives a record to compare against.
What a survey costs
All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- How big the roof is
- Which survey package you book
- House, block, shop or office
Every price we give includes VAT. Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. You will know the price for your roof before you book.
Helping us price your survey
When you call or email, these details help:
- Any deadline, like an exchange date

- The address and postcode of the property
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

What you can safely check yourself
It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Stonehills: your questions answered
Is my home in Stonehills listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Is the coastal weather around Stonehills hard on roofs?
Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch, and Stonehills is within about 1 mile of the coast.
How long will you be at the property?
Allow an hour or two for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. We’ll give you an idea of timing as you book.
Are you insured?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Will you climb onto the roof?
Only when it is safe. Many roofs can be seen well from windows, vantage points and the loft, and Premium includes a drone where applicable.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, including VAT.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We carry out surveys on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
How the survey works
Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Older rural homes like those around Stonehills can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
- On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
- Coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are inspected and photographed.
- Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
- The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

A quick phone call is usually the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or email us. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
Advice
What we are asked to look at in Stonehills
Blocked gutters cause a surprising amount of damage. Leaves, moss and silt build up, the gutter overflows and water soaks the walls. Hidden gutters behind parapets and in valleys can send water indoors.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Valley linings that have cracked or split
- Ridge tiles that have lifted or moved
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
- Crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of All Saints, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Local roofs in Stonehills
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Stonehills, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
Beaulieu Palace House lies about 4.6 miles west, so building around Stonehills goes back a long way. On a period home nearby, the survey separates sound original work from tired later repairs.
