Roof survey in Hazeleigh, Essex
Independent roof surveys in Hazeleigh. We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

What a roof survey doesn’t cover
No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Bear these in mind:
- A full building survey of the property
- Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.

About our roof survey in Hazeleigh
People book a roof survey for all sorts of reasons. Some have spotted a stain or a slipped slate, others want a check before selling or after years without one. Whatever the reason, the survey works the same way: a careful look, then a clear written report. We survey on weekdays and at weekends, so finding a time is rarely difficult. We survey clay and concrete tiles, lead flashings and ridges, hips and valleys, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are ridge tiles that have lifted or moved and crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching.
In a village or hamlet like Hazeleigh, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it is normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

The survey, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. Most visits take an hour or two at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. For a village or hamlet like Hazeleigh, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- We start by hearing what you’d like checked and why.
- We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
- We look at the roof from each safe vantage point, inside and out.
- We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and photograph what we find.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming

Related advice
Different roofs, different checks
Natural slate
From the loft, we look at the underside of a slate roof. Older roofs may have bitumen felt underlay, and very old roofs none.
Lead flashings and valleys
Most leaks begin at a joint rather than the middle of a slope. They get particular attention in every survey.

FAQs for Hazeleigh
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near South Woodham Ferrers station?
Yes, that is a common request. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Hazeleigh, take more of a battering?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before you book. For a price, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
What insurance do you have?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability.
Do you go up on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the loft space. On Premium, a drone is used where it applies.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where applicable and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
Does a roof survey replace a structural engineer?
No. Our survey looks at the condition of the roof, and the Standard and Premium packages include a structural check. It isn’t a structural engineer’s report and does not include calculations.
Leave it or get it looked at?
Before you put a home on the market, it helps to know the roof’s condition. You will know what a buyer’s survey might pick up, or at least know what to expect. In a place like Hazeleigh, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Can I check my roof myself?
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Useful tips for Hazeleigh property owners
Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. Our suggestions:
- Stay off ladders and the roof
- Keep a record of damp patches and dates
- Check the roof from the ground after storms
- Include dormers, porches and garages when booking
If you need work done, the report gives roofers a clear brief. They’ll see each defect and its location, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Have gutters and valleys cleared regularly, particularly after autumn. Leave the clearing to a professional. Clear gutters prevent a lot of damp.
Roof surveys around Hazeleigh
Hazeleigh is within about 4 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. With Danbury Place about 3.4 miles west, Hazeleigh sits in an area with a long building history. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof.
For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Margaret, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. For landlords with property near South Woodham Ferrers station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.
