Tips from our surveys

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Don’t climb onto the roof yourself
  • Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
  • Check the roof from the ground after storms
  • Have details of recent roof work to hand

If you need work done, the report gives roofers a clear brief. They’ll see each defect and its location, so their quotes cover the same ground.

After a storm, check the roof from the garden and the street. Fragments of slate or tile on the ground mean something has shifted. Getting small faults fixed quickly keeps water out.

Roof survey in Heybridge: what you get

Everything we check, we check safely: from ground level, from windows and other vantage points, from inside the loft and from the roof itself where it is safe. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging and, where it applies, a drone, which helps with tall or steep roofs. You do not need to do anything except give us access. Everything we see is photographed for the report. Typical surveys look at blocked, sagging or leaking gutters and debris building up in roof valleys, on ridges, hips and valleys, the roof space and natural slate.

Trees around homes in smaller places like Heybridge drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below. A report spots that kind of slow problem before it becomes damp inside. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from the ground.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up
  • Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

What happens if roof problems are left?

If you’re planning to sell, a roof survey can help you prepare. You’ll know what a buyer’s survey might pick up, or at least know what to expect. Blocked gutters on homes around Heybridge overflow and soak walls, especially where trees overhang. It is easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.

What a survey costs

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:

  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Booking your survey

Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:

  • What made you get in touch
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside

Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Roof surveys in Heybridge: local notes

Heybridge lies within about 2 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

Landlords with a home close to Hatfield Peverel station may find that a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Andrew, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Heybridge Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Heybridge is about 1 mile north of Maldon, in Essex. We survey roofs in Heybridge and the rest of Essex, as part of our work across London and South East England. Heybridge is one of the places in Essex where we work for roof surveys. We also survey roofs in Chelmsford.

Every address in CM9 is covered for roof surveys. If you need a roof survey at a property on Oak Road, Mill Lane and Hall Road or anywhere close by, we can survey it. Neighbouring places we cover for roof surveys include Broad Street Green (1 mile north), Maldon (1 mile south), Langford (1 mile north-west), Great Totham (2 miles north) and Curling Tye Green (2 miles west). We also work in nearby towns such as Colchester (14 miles north-east), Chelmsford (9 miles west), Basildon (15 miles south-west), Braintree (11 miles north-west), Billericay (14 miles south-west) and Rayleigh (11 miles south).

Heybridge: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in Heybridge is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

I let a flat near Hatfield Peverel station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

Do you cover Heybridge for roof surveys?

Yes. We survey roofs in Heybridge and the rest of Essex, as part of our work across London and the South East. For a price, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to.

Will you climb onto the roof?

Where it is safe, yes. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the loft space. On Premium, a drone is used where applicable.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.

What do you check on a roof survey?

Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, along with the loft where it is safe. The report includes photos and recommendations.

What happens on the day

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. The survey usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. In a smaller place like Heybridge, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can frequently be seen well from the ground, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.

  1. We start with the property details and any concerns.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
  3. We check the roof from every safe vantage point outside.
  4. Inside, we check the roof space where there is safe access.
  5. You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
