Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Hollingdean
Our roof survey gives you a clear picture of your roof’s condition. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, and the loft space where there’s safe access. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations. Where it helps, we say which items are urgent and which can wait. We’re often asked to look into gaps in the roof where coverings have gone and gutters that overflow in heavy rain, across clay and concrete tiles, flat roofs and ridges, hips and valleys.
Trees around homes in smaller places like Hollingdean drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls, and moss holds water against tiles. It’s the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from ground level.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

Local roofs in Hollingdean
Hollingdean lies within about 2 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. With Preston Manor & Gardens about 0.9 miles west, Hollingdean sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you look after a building such as Hertford Infant and Nursery School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Churchill Square, a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions. For an older house near a landmark such as St Richard's, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.
Hollingdean is about 1 mile north of Brighton, in Brighton and Hove. If you are in Hollingdean, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Our area takes in places right across Brighton and Hove.

Tips from our surveys
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Stay off ladders and the roof
- Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
- Hold on to the report for future surveys
- Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
Any roofer you ask to quote can work from the report. The photos show what we found and where, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Look at your roof from ground level after strong winds. Fragments of slate or tile on the ground mean something has shifted. Getting small faults fixed quickly keeps water out.
How we price roof surveys
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Common questions in Hollingdean
Is Hollingdean within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hollingdean?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is frequently shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
Can you survey a roof I share with a neighbour?
Yes, the part you own or can give access to. We can only look at neighbouring roofs as far as access allows. Shared stacks and upstands are looked at from your property.
How do I arrange a roof survey in Hollingdean?
It’s easiest to call 07833 053749 or email us. Let us know the address and a little about the roof. We survey on any day of the week.
What insurance do you have?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where applicable and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.
Checking the roof from the ground
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Different roofs, different checks
Chimney stacks
Water that gets into a stack can show as damp in the rooms below. We check the flashings and mortar for the cause.
Clay plain and peg tiles
Clay tiles are common on older South East homes, and some have Kent peg tiles held by pegs. Rotten pegs and battens let tiles move.
Leave it or get it looked at?
Roof faults rarely stay the same size. One slipped slate lets water reach the battens and underlay, and wet timber starts to decay. Finding it early keeps the work smaller. In an older home around Hollingdean, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, and that’s a much bigger job than the original defect.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.
