About our roof survey in Knowle

Everything we check, we check safely: from the ground, from windows and other vantage points, from inside the loft and from the roof itself where it’s safe. Premium adds thermal imaging, plus a drone inspection where it applies, for roofs that are hard to see well. All we need from you is access to the property and the loft. Each defect we find is photographed and explained. If you are worried about loose chimney pots and cracked mortar along the ridge, we can find out what’s behind it.

Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.

It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

What you can safely check yourself

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Tips from our surveys

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Tell us about any leaks or stains you’ve seen
  • Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
  • Hold on to the report for future surveys
  • Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive

Your report arrives by email, with photographs of what we found. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day. Each finding is set out in plain English, with recommendations.

After a storm, check the roof from the garden and the street. Slipped slates, lifted ridge tiles or pieces in the garden are signs something has moved. Getting small faults fixed quickly keeps water out.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.

Roof surveys around Knowle

Knowle is within about 4 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Francis, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. For landlords with property near Fareham station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. Take a building like Orchard Lea Infant School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Knowle is about 2 miles north of Fareham, in Hampshire. From houses to flats and shops in Knowle, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire. You can also see our page for Portsmouth.

All of PO17 is covered for roof surveys, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Local streets include Serotine Close, Boundary Walk and Park Approach, all of which we cover. Other places close to Knowle include Funtley (1 mile south), Tapnage (1 mile north-west), Heathfield (2 miles south), Segensworth (2 miles west) and Titchfield Park (2 miles south-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Winchester (13 miles north), Gosport (6 miles south-east), Havant (10 miles east), Eastleigh (9 miles north-west), Horndean (9 miles east) and Totton (13 miles west).

Why act early in Knowle

If you’re planning to sell, a roof survey can help you prepare. You can deal with defects before a buyer’s surveyor finds them. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

What happens on the day

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes an hour or two for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Around Knowle, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
  2. On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
  3. We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
  4. Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
  5. The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

FAQs for Knowle

Will you come out to Knowle?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Knowle, take more of a battering?

Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.

How quickly will I get the report?

The Premium Survey has a same-day report, Standard 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Photos are included.

What does a roof survey include?

Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, along with the loft where it is safe. The report includes photos and recommendations.

Do you go up on the roof?

When the roof and the conditions make it safe, yes. We also use views from ground level, windows and the loft space, and Premium includes a drone where applicable.

Can you tell me how long my roof will last?

Not as a figure. The report explains the condition of each part and the signs of wear, with recommendations ranked by urgency.

Does someone need to be in?

That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

How we price roof surveys

Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:

  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages

To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a few details. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Helping us price your survey

The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you get in touch, it’s useful to mention:

  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one

When you’re ready to go ahead, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.
