Roof survey in Sprig's Alley, Oxfordshire
Roof surveys in Sprig's Alley from an independent, experienced roof surveyor. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys.
- Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
- Leaking gutter joints and downpipes
- Debris building up in roof valleys
Do you need a roof survey in Sprig's Alley?
The coverings are rarely the first thing to fail. On slate roofs, corroded nails let slates slip, which is known as ‘nail fatigue’. On tiled roofs, the battens or pegs may be what’s gone.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Loose chimney pots
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
Landlords with a home close to Saunderton station may find that knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

Roof survey in Sprig's Alley: what you get
Roof coverings last a long time, but not for ever. Slate often lasts a century or more, and tiles commonly half a century, yet nails, battens and underlay often fail first. A survey shows which parts of your roof are wearing. That lets you plan work in good time rather than after a leak. We are often asked to look into slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles and gutters that overflow in heavy rain, across the roof space, clay and concrete tiles and flat roofs.
Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Sprig's Alley: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Sprig's Alley is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
I let a flat near Saunderton station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a few details, including who will give access on the day.
What insurance do you have?
We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
What do you check on a roof survey?
Every part of the roof we can safely see: the slates or tiles, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys, gutters and roof space. Higher packages add moisture detection, structural checks, thermal imaging and a drone where it applies.
Can you check whether my roof contains asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on older buildings, we flag them and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Do you inspect the roof from on top?
Only where it is safe to do so. We also inspect from ground level, from windows and vantage points, and from the loft. The Premium Survey adds a drone where applicable.
Can you tell me how long my roof will last?
Not as an exact number, since the fixings, underlay and maintenance all play a part. Instead, we set out what’s sound, what’s wearing and what to do first.
What affects the price in Sprig's Alley
All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Height and safe access
- House, block, shop or office
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT.
Helping us price your survey
If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can call 07833 053749 or email us to find out.

Flat roof coverings
Some flat roofs have been coated over several times. We say what we can see and when a closer look would need opening up.
Chimney stacks
We look at the stack itself, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If a specialist is needed, we’ll say so.
What this survey cannot tell you
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Walls, floors and services below the roof
- How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

Practical tips
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
- Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
- Hold on to the report for future surveys
- Don’t climb onto the roof yourself
File the report with your other home documents. It gives you something to compare against later, and it can help when you sell.
Keep the loft space ventilated. Condensation builds up when air cannot move, and it can wet timbers and insulation. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow at the eaves.
