Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Headington Quarry
Everything we check, we check safely: from the ground, from windows and other vantage points, from inside the loft and from the roof itself where it is safe. Premium adds thermal imaging, plus a drone inspection where applicable, for roofs that are hard to see well. All we need from you is access to the property and the loft. Each defect we find is photographed and explained. If you’ve noticed leaking gutter joints and downpipes and slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney stacks, the roof space and ridges, hips and valleys alike.
In a smaller place like Headington Quarry, some roofs stand more exposed to wind and rain than in a built-up town. Ridge tiles, verges, chimney stacks and flashings take the worst of it. A careful look shows whether anything has started to loosen. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

Your questions about roof surveys in Headington Quarry
Can a landlord with a rental near Oxford station book a roof survey?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details.
Is Headington Quarry within the area you cover?
Yes. Headington Quarry is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Is a roof survey the same as a structural survey?
No. If we see signs that need an engineer, such as serious sagging, we will say so. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report.
Can you tell me how long my roof will last?
Not as a figure. We describe the condition of each part of the roof and how it’s wearing, with recommendations ranked by urgency.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
How long does the visit take?
On site, it usually takes between one and two hours for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. The report follows within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
How the survey works
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photos, emailed to you. As for time on site, most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. In a smaller place like Headington Quarry, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.
- You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- We check the roof from every safe vantage point outside.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- We email a written report with photographs and recommendations.

Do you need a roof survey in Headington Quarry?
Not every roof problem comes from outside. Poor ventilation lets condensation build up in the loft, wetting timbers and insulation. It can look like a leak.
Problems we come across often include:
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
- Loose ridge or hip tiles
- Gutters that overflow in heavy rain
- Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
If you let a flat or house near Oxford station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.
Before you book anyone
- Their insurance cover
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
Can I check my roof myself?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Roof by roof
Chimney stacks
Each chimney’s pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings are looked at. Leaning stacks and loose pots are recorded.
Natural slate
Inside the loft space, we check what’s under the slates. Older roofs may have bitumen felt underlay, and very old roofs none, and we note its condition.
What a roof survey looks like in Headington Quarry
If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
Holywell Manor, about 2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Headington Quarry. Older homes in the area may have roofs that need matching materials when work is done. If you look after a building such as Headington Quarry Foundation Stage School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
