Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Baythorne End
A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. It’s a written report with photos, sent by email. It does not price the repairs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. What you get is an independent record of the damage and what seems to have caused it. We survey flat roofs, ridges and hips and slate and tile slopes, and people most often book us about roofs hit by falling trees and flat roof edges peeled back.
Somewhere as small as Baythorne End, older roofs have often been repaired many times. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, and the difference matters, especially to an insurer. We check everything that’s safely in view and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Tips that help
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
- Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
- Keep receipts for any emergency work
- Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
If a claim is declined and you disagree, the first step is a complaint to the insurer. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Keep the roof in good order between storms. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.
What a survey costs
To price your survey, we check:
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- The roof’s overall size
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Getting in touch
Before you get in touch, it helps to have:
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- When you need the report by
- What made you get in touch
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
What we look for on each type of roof
Clay and concrete tiles
Strong gusts can lift and break tiles. The report shows each damaged area.
Slate roofs
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails often fail first. We check whether slipped slates suggest storm damage, older wear or both.
What happens on the day
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. Most visits take about one to two hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a hamlet or village like Baythorne End, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
- We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there is access.
- The damage is recorded with photographs, area by area.
- We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
- We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Leave side gates unlocked

Leaks and storm damage in Baythorne End
Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, alongside a good many post-war and newer estates. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.
If you look after a building like Stoke College, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Leonard, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.

Questions from Baythorne End
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Baythorne End?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you cover Baythorne End?
Yes, Baythorne End is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
What if my insurer declines the claim?
Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we cannot say how it will turn out.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.
How are storm damage reports priced?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs aren’t included, so ask a roofer to quote.
How experienced are you?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Can I check the roof after a storm?
Please don’t climb onto the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Record the date and any damage inside as well.

Checking the roof from ground level
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
It is useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.
Why act early in Baythorne End
Knowing whether older wear played a part helps you understand your position. Our report gives an honest view of both, so there are no surprises later. For older village homes like those around Baythorne End, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.
