Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Becontree

The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. If you’ve noticed ridge tiles that have come loose and torn or lifted flat roof coverings, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney stacks, slate and tile slopes and gutters and fascias alike.

In a London flat, water can travel some way before it shows. That makes the source hard to pin down, and finding it matters for whoever has to deal with it. In Becontree, we inspect what we can reach safely and are given access to. It helps to know when the water appears and in what weather.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

Practical tips

Getting the most from a storm damage roof report starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Check your policy for how to report damage
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage
  • Keep receipts for any emergency work
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in

After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each area of damage. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

How the survey changes by roof type

Ridge and hip tiles

Ridge tiles bedded in old mortar can loosen in high winds. Our report says whether it looks freshly damaged or worn over time.

Clay and concrete tiles

Older tiles held only by nibs, without nails or clips, can lift more easily. We note what we can see of how tiles are fixed.

Why it is worth a survey now in Becontree

With an independent report, you have something specific to show your insurer. It records the damage and what seems to have caused it, alongside any photos you took yourself. Work on a London roof is rarely simple to arrange, with parking, neighbours and access all to think about. That’s a good reason to find problems early, while there’s time to plan, rather than in a rush after a leak.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Our price is from £150, including VAT.

What you get with us

What you can safely check yourself

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.

What we do, step by step

We do not take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a London area like Becontree, the main things to sort out are parking and access: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. On the day, the roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. We check the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Before the survey

  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

FAQs for Becontree

Do you cover Becontree?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Becontree as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is my home in Becontree listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Do you act for me with my insurer?

No. We are not loss adjusters and don’t act for you with the insurer. We give you an independent report of the damage, which you can pass to your insurer.

Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?

That is not something we can promise. The decision rests with your insurer and its policy. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.

Will you check the loft?

If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days when you book.

How much is a storm damage roof report?

A storm damage report starts from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. The report doesn’t include repair costs.

What a storm damage roof report doesn’t cover

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Becontree

In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. Eastbury Manor House, about 2.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Becontree. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

For an older house near a landmark such as St George's, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. Anyone responsible for a site like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. Trees in and around Parsloes Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters.
