- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Loose or torn flashings
- Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
- Roofs hit by falling trees
Take a building like Buckland Church of England Primary School: a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Buckland
If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Take photos from ground level or from windows, and don’t climb onto the roof. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. Common reasons to book are new damp or leaks inside and slipped or missing slates or tiles, on gutters and fascias, slate and tile slopes and flat roofs.
Somewhere as small as Buckland, older roofs have often been repaired many times. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, which matters if you are thinking of an insurance claim. We check what can be seen safely and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

The survey, step by step
On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. After that, we check everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where it applies. Most surveys take about one to two hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a hamlet or village like Buckland, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
- We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
- We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
- We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
- We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed

Wind, rain and roofs in Buckland
West Oxfordshire’s older buildings often carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. About 2.6 miles east lies Longworth House, a reminder of how long the area around Buckland has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
Take an older house close to Roman Catholic Church of St George: lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Buckland questions
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Buckland?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Buckland within the area you cover?
Yes, Buckland is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
How do I arrange a storm damage roof report in Buckland?
To book, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and agree a day with you.
Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?
Only your insurer can decide that. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, for you to give to your insurer.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.
Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?
A roofer should handle temporary protection. Photograph the damage first if you can do so safely. We can record the damage in our report.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only if it’s safe. We check everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Roof by roof
Chimney stacks
Stacks with existing defects tend to suffer more in storms. Our report notes recent damage and older defects.
Slate roofs
Slates often outlast the nails that hold them. We look at whether slipped slates suggest storm damage, older wear or both.
When you need someone else
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
- The outcome of a claim
- Your insurer’s view of the claim
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and does not.
