How a storm damage roof report works in Chertsey

After a storm, it’s useful to have a clear record of what happened to your roof. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We are not loss adjusters and can’t tell you if your claim will succeed. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. We are frequently asked to look into damaged ridges and hips and flat roof edges peeled back, across flat roofs, chimney stacks and gutters and fascias.

Chimney stacks on older houses around places like Chertsey can let water in, through worn flaunching, failed pointing or lifted flashings. Damp on a chimney breast is not always rain from above, which is why it’s worth tracing properly. The stack, its flashings and the loft space beside it are all worth checking.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Checking the roof from ground level

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book and it will help the survey.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

When you need someone else

Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • A decision on your insurance claim
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

What this survey covers

  • Flat roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings

How we price storm damage roof reports

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:

  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Roof area
  • How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
  • Height and safe access

To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Helping us price your survey

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, it helps to mention:

  • What made you get in touch
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window

We survey roofs on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a date that works for you, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and the days you’d prefer.

For landlords and managing agents

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Bigger roofs take more time, and they’re priced for the size.

Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. Access is agreed with the tenant in advance.

What we do, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs, sent to you by email. On timing, most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Homes around Chertsey frequently have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. You receive the written report with photos.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Getting a price

If you’re buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or email us whenever suits you.

Common roof problems in Chertsey

Falling trees and branches can damage roofs in high winds. We record the damage and where it is, with photos.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Broken or displaced guttering
  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Peter, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

What to check before booking

  • What exactly goes into their report
  • What insurance they carry
  • What experience they bring
  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Chertsey

Will you come out to Chertsey?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Is my home in Chertsey listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We carry out surveys on weekdays and at weekends. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What wind speed counts as a storm?

It depends on your policy. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Check your policy wording.

Will you check the loft?

If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

Emergency temporary protection is a job for a roofer. Photograph the damage first if you can do so safely. We can record the damage in our report.

What if the roof was already worn?

Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so it is clear what we found. How the policy applies is up to your insurer.

Storm damage roof reports in Chertsey: local notes

The wider area around Chertsey has a long history of building, with Botleys Mansion about 1.5 miles south-west. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.
