Need a storm damage roof report in Darland?

What happens if roof problems are left?

Once the storm has passed, damage that looked minor can let water in for months. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is normally better. In a place like Darland, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Darland

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from the ground or a window, and never climb up. Emergency temporary protection, like covering an opening, is a job for a roofer. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. Typical surveys look at gutters pulled loose in the wind and roofs hit by falling trees, across ridges and hips, gutters and fascias and flashings.

Roofs in small places like Darland often stand in the open, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

How the survey works

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes about one to two hours at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. In a small place like Darland, access is normally the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. We check the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Advice

Questions from Darland

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Darland, take more of a battering?

Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.

Will you come out to Darland?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Will you deal with the insurance company for me?

No. We are not loss adjusters, and we don’t negotiate claims. We provide an independent record of the roof for you to send to your insurer.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Raise it with your insurer first. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that does not resolve it. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Do you look in the roof space?

Normally, if there is one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that can’t be seen from outside.

What you can safely check yourself

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.

Leaks and storm damage in Darland

Darland lies within about 3 miles of the sea, where storms can bring strong gusts off the sea. What counts as a storm is set by each policy, frequently gusts of around 55 mph, and the insurer makes the decision. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.

The streets around a church such as Christ Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. Restoration House, about 2.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Darland. Leaks in period homes nearby often come from lead work and valleys that have been patched before.

Darland is about 1 mile south-west of Gillingham, in Medway. We provide storm damage roof reports for householders, landlords and businesses in Darland. Our area takes in places right across Medway. We also survey roofs in Maidstone.

Surveys in ME7 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether your property is on Brickmakers Way, Banksview Drive and Pear Tree Lane or a nearby road, we can help. Common roof problems in Darland

Branches and trees often come down on roofs during storms. We record the damage and where it is, with photos.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Gutters pulled loose in the wind
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls

For businesses in and around places like Pentagon Shopping Centre, finding where water is getting in quickly keeps disruption down.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Is VAT included in the price?

What a good roof survey covers

How the survey changes by roof type

Ridge and hip tiles

Worn mortar under ridge tiles can let them lift in a storm. We note whether the mortar looks recently broken or long worn.

Flat roof coverings

Wind can lift the edges of flat roof coverings or tear them. Damage is photographed and described.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Darland

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photographs included.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.
