Tips that help

You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in

If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

After a storm, look at the roof from the street or garden. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or lifted ridges. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

Storm damage roof report in Gillingham: what you get

A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. You get a written report with photos by email. It is not a repair quote and doesn’t include repair costs, so you’ll need a roofer’s quote for that. The insurer may still send a loss adjuster of its own. What you get is an independent record of the damage and what seems to have caused it. If you are worried about damage from fallen branches or debris and new damp or leaks inside, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs, slate and tile slopes and ridges and hips alike.

Flats above shops, offices and blocks with flat roofs are common in places the size of Gillingham. On a flat roof, water can get in at a split or an upstand and run under the covering before it shows. Finding the entry point takes patience as well as moisture readings. The usual signs are ponding, blisters and splits in the covering.

The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What to expect from a roof survey

What we can’t see

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
  • The outcome of a claim
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Gutters and fascias
  • Flat roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flashings
  • Ridges and hips
  • Slate and tile slopes

What we do, step by step

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In Gillingham, we survey everything from flats and houses to commercial buildings. Each building type brings its own access questions, from shared stairwells to locked plant rooms. Surveys can be booked for any day of the week.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building

Advice

What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. This is what makes a difference:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • House, block, shop or office
  • The roof’s overall size

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Anything about access we should know

Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email to find out.

Gillingham roofs and the weather

Gillingham lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. In a coastal gale, rain is driven sideways into laps, verges and flashings. The wider area around Gillingham has a long history of building, with Restoration House about 3.3 miles west. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Trees in and around Ambley Wood shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Holy Trinity Church, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Gillingham questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Gillingham?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Is Gillingham in the area you cover?

Yes, Gillingham is within the area we cover. Our area covers London and the South East. You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

There’s no single figure. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Check your policy wording.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days as you book.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

The decision is your insurer’s, not ours. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, for you to give to your insurer.

How long will you be at the property?

It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. You’ll then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.
