About our storm damage roof report in Farthingloe
Our storm damage report gives you an independent, written record of how a storm has affected your roof. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. The decision on any claim rests with your insurer and its policy wording. We are not loss adjusters and can’t say whether a claim will be paid. We survey chimney stacks, flashings and gutters and fascias, and common reasons people get in touch are lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles and loose or broken chimney pots and cowls.
For a small place like Farthingloe, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Tips that help
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it’s safe to do so
- Take photos of stains and damp inside
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
- Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
After a storm, look at the roof from the street or garden. With binoculars, you can often spot problems without climbing. Don’t go up a ladder to look.
Farthingloe questions
Will you come out to Farthingloe?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Farthingloe?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
How much is a storm damage roof report?
A storm damage report starts from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. Repair costs aren’t part of the report.
Is wear and tear covered by insurance?
Insurers usually exclude wear and tear. Our report gives an honest view of what’s recent damage and what’s older wear. The claim decision is your insurer’s.
My storm claim was turned down. What now?
Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we can’t predict the outcome.
How experienced are you?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

What else we do in Farthingloe
Can I check my roof myself?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
What this survey can’t tell you
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Whether your insurer will pay the claim
- Acting for you with the insurer
- Your insurer’s view of the claim
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Storm damage roof reports around Farthingloe
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Farthingloe, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. In a coastal gale, rain is driven sideways into laps, verges and flashings. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask.
Take an older house close to Aycliffe Church Centre: the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. Homes near green spaces such as Whinless Down can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. Anyone responsible for a site like Aycliffe Community Primary School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Why get it checked now?
Many policies expect damage to be reported promptly. Check the wording and tell your insurer as soon as you can. Our report can then add a clear record. For an older or listed building in a place like Farthingloe, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.

The survey, step by step
We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. All told, expect an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Older rural homes like those around Farthingloe can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- We record and photograph the damage.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
