Storm damage roof report in Finberry: what you get

Our storm damage report starts from £150. It is a photo-illustrated written report, sent by email. It does not price the repairs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. We survey gutters and fascias, slate and tile slopes and ridges and hips, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are damaged gutters and fascias and loose or torn flashings.

For a small place like Finberry, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It is useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Finberry: your questions answered

Do you carry out roof surveys in Finberry?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Do you cover smaller places like Finberry?

Yes, Finberry is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Surveys run seven days a week. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.

What do I do if water is coming in?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. If it’s safe, photograph the damage before it’s covered. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

What happens on the day

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. For a village or hamlet like Finberry, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know about parking near the property

Roof by roof

Lead flashings

Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.

Flat roof coverings

Wind can lift the edges of flat roof coverings or tear them. Damage is photographed and described.

Tips that help

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:

  • Read your policy wording on storm damage
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed

You’ll need a roofer’s quote for the repairs. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

Finberry roofs and the weather

Handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles hung on pegs through two holes, are typical of older Kent buildings. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. Godinton House, about 4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Finberry. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you let a flat or house near Ashford International station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Ashford Designer Outlet, water through a ceiling can damage stock and close a sales floor, so the source needs finding fast. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Mary, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

For landlords and managing agents

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it as you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

What we cannot see

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages

All our prices include VAT. Our price is from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your roof before you book.

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • What made you get in touch
  • Anything about access we should know
