Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Preston

Is Preston within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Preston?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

How long is the visit?

Expect it to take between one and two hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. You’ll then get the report by email.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when you book.

What wind speed counts as a storm?

Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but check your own wording.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We look at everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

We cannot say whether a claim will be paid. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.

Storm damage roof report in Preston

A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. You can then give it to your insurer with your claim. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We’re not loss adjusters, and we can’t tell you whether a claim will succeed. We’re often asked to look into gutters pulled loose in the wind and slates and tiles blown off the roof, on chimney stacks, flat roofs and gutters and fascias.

In a smaller place like Preston, some roofs face open ground, where driving rain gets into any gap at a ridge, verge or flashing. A leak that only appears in certain weather often points to an exposed detail. It is useful to know when and where the water appears. Gutters and downpipes on the exposed side are worth a look as well.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

What we do, step by step

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit typically takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Parking around Preston is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from the ground, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photos.

What a storm damage roof report does not cover

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • How your policy defines a storm
  • A decision on your insurance claim
  • Negotiating a claim settlement

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flashings
  • Ridges and hips
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Chimney stacks
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flat roofs

Different roofs, different checks

Lead flashings

Old flashings that were already loose can give way in a storm. Our report separates fresh damage from older wear where we can.

Chimney stacks

Flashings around stacks can lift in strong winds. Loose flashings are recorded.

Storm damage roof reports around Preston

Preston lies within about 4 miles of the sea, so storms can arrive with strong gusts off the water. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies, and the insurer decides the claim. Across Kent, older roofs are frequently handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.

If you let a flat or house near Faversham station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Living close to Oare Meadow is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn.

Preston is about 7 miles south-west of Whitstable, in Kent. Roofs in Preston get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Kent. Our area takes in places right across Kent, large and small. Canterbury is in our area too.

Tips that help

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage
  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can

You get the report by email and pass it to your insurer yourself. It’s your record to use.

Keep records of roof work and surveys. They can help show the roof was looked after.

Common roof problems in Preston

Falling trees and branches can damage roofs in high winds. The report shows what was hit and the damage caused, backed up with photos.

Problems we come across often include:

  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
  • Flat roof edges peeled back
  • Ridge tiles that have come loose

For hotels and guest houses around Preston, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest.
