Why it is worth a survey now in Isle of Dogs
Your policy may say how quickly you need to report damage. Check the wording and tell your insurer as soon as you can. Our report can then add a clear record. London’s older roofs frequently have bitumen felt underlay or none at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can be seen safely and the package you choose.

About our storm damage roof report in Isle of Dogs
Our storm damage report gives you an independent, written record of how a storm has affected your roof. It sets out what is damaged, with photographs, and what we think the likely cause is. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We are not loss adjusters, and we can’t tell you whether a claim will succeed. If you’ve noticed roofs hit by falling trees and water coming in after the storm, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney stacks, flashings and ridges and hips alike.
London’s Victorian and Edwardian roofs have frequently been repaired many times, so a new leak can be the latest sign of wear rather than a single event. Telling wear from a one-off event matters, because insurers usually exclude wear and tear. A careful look in Isle of Dogs tells the two apart where the evidence allows. A written record with photographs helps you explain what was found to whoever deals with it next.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How the survey works
The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect an hour or two for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. In a London area like Isle of Dogs, the main things to sort out are parking and access: let us know about parking, the floor the property is on, any shared entrance and loft access. On the day, the roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space and from the roof where it’s safe.
- First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
- We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there is access.
- We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
- We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
- The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming

Isle of Dogs questions
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Isle of Dogs?
It depends on the street. If Isle of Dogs has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer.
Do you cover Isle of Dogs?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Isle of Dogs is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Is wear and tear covered by insurance?
Insurers normally exclude wear and tear. Our report gives an honest view of what’s recent damage and what’s older wear. Your insurer decides the claim.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days when you book.
Will you check the loft?
If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Do you act for me with my insurer?
No. We are not loss adjusters, and we don’t negotiate claims. We provide an independent record of the roof for you to send to your insurer.

Roof by roof
Ridge and hip tiles
A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. Each one is recorded with photos.
Chimney stacks
High winds can loosen pots, cowls and aerials on stacks. The report notes any damage to the stack.
What we are asked to look at in Isle of Dogs
Branches and trees frequently come down on roofs during storms. The report shows what was hit and the damage caused, with photographs.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Broken or displaced guttering
- Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
- Damaged flat roof membrane
- Ridge tiles that have come loose
For landlords with property near Greenwich station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away.
Questions to ask before you book
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- How long the report takes to arrive
- What they will not be able to tell you
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
Tips that help
Small things make a difference. Some pointers:
- Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
- Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
- Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
- Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.
What you can safely check yourself
It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Storm damage roof reports in Isle of Dogs: local notes
Many homes in inner London are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, frequently with Welsh slate roofs. From the street you may see only a parapet, with a butterfly roof and a valley gutter behind it draining to the back. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. With Queen's House about 0.8 miles south-east, Isle of Dogs sits in an area with a long building history. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
The streets around a church such as Church of St Nicholas are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. Shop and office owners around Surrey Quays Shopping Centre may find that water through a ceiling can damage stock and close a sales floor, so the source needs finding fast.
