What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Which survey package you book
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • When you need the report by
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • What made you get in touch
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat

Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. You will have a price before anything is arranged.

Storm damage roof report in Preston: what you get

Our storm damage report gives you an independent, written record of how a storm has affected your roof. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. The decision on any claim rests with your insurer and its policy wording. We’re not loss adjusters, and we can’t tell you whether a claim will succeed. We survey chimney stacks, slate and tile slopes and flat roofs, and people most often book us about gaps where slates or tiles have gone and damaged ridges and hips.

In a village or hamlet like Preston, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, and the difference matters, particularly to an insurer. We check what can be seen safely and set out what we find. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it’s worth finding the cause soon.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

The survey, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. It typically takes about one to two hours for most houses, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Rural addresses near Preston can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. You let us know when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We check whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

High winds can loosen pots, cowls and aerials on stacks. The report notes any damage to the stack.

Slate roofs

In high winds, slates can slip or go, frequently where nails have rusted. We record which slates have moved and any signs of older nail fatigue.

What happens if roof problems are left?

If a roofer needs to make the roof safe, take photos first if you can do so safely from the ground. That keeps a record of how it looked. Older and listed buildings around Preston may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Questions from Preston

How do I find out if my home in Preston is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you cover Preston?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

How do I arrange a storm damage roof report in Preston?

It is easiest to call 07833 053749 or email us. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we will recommend the right survey. Surveys run seven days a week.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.

Do you act for me with my insurer?

No. We aren’t loss adjusters and don’t act for you with the insurer. We give you an independent report of the damage, which you can pass to your insurer.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

Storm damage roof reports around Preston

About 4 miles south lies Goodnestone Park, a reminder of how long the area around Preston has been built on. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mildred, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Preston Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.
