Common questions in Upstreet

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Upstreet, take more of a battering?

Often, yes. Upstreet is within about 4 miles of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.

Will you come out to Upstreet?

Yes, Upstreet is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Do you look in the loft space?

If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days when you book.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to.

Storm damage roof report in Upstreet: what you get

High winds usually affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Falling branches can cause damage too. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. If you’ve noticed holes or cracks caused by debris and damaged ridges and hips, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Being in a small place like Upstreet makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned in advance. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Upstreet

Storms do not only affect pitched roofs. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. We record what we find on flat and pitched roofs alike.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • Damaged flat roof membrane

For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Mary the Virgin, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

What to expect from a roof survey

Wind, rain and roofs in Upstreet

The coast is about 4 miles or less from Upstreet, where storms can bring strong gusts off the sea. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies, and the insurer decides the claim. Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.

Landlords with a home close to Sturry station may find that a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Chislet Church of England Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Upstreet is about 4 miles south-east of Herne Bay, in Kent. Bookings from Upstreet are handled just like any other: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Our area takes in places right across Kent. Canterbury is in our area too.

Why get it checked now?

A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is normally better. Outbuildings and barns around Upstreet are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

The survey, step by step

When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take about one to two hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Cottages and farmhouses around Upstreet frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Advice

Should I look at the roof myself first?

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

Tips from our surveys

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can

You’ll need a roofer’s quote for the repairs. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.

Keep records of roof work and surveys. They help show the roof was in good order before a storm.

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Stacks with existing defects tend to suffer more in storms. We record both the storm damage and the older wear.

Clay and concrete tiles

Broken or missing tiles leave the underlay exposed to rain. Each gap is recorded with a photo.
