About our storm damage roof report in Redlands
We inspect the roof from wherever it can safely be seen: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there’s access, and the roof itself where that is safe. Every area of damage is photographed and described. If part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The report, with photos, is yours to pass to your insurer. We survey flat roofs, flashings and chimney stacks, and people most often book us about damaged flat roof membrane and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks.
Roofs in small places like Redlands frequently stand in the open, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Redlands roofs and the weather
With Farnham Castle about 2.3 miles south-east, Redlands sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.
Shop and office owners around Hart Shopping Centre may find that a quick answer on where water is coming in keeps a business running. The streets around a church like Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

How the survey changes by roof type
Ridge and hip tiles
Worn mortar under ridge tiles can let them lift in a storm. Our report says whether it looks freshly damaged or worn over time.
Clay and concrete tiles
Older tiles held only by nibs, without nails or clips, can lift more easily. We record what we can see of the fixings.
What you can safely check yourself
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Do you need a storm damage roof report in Redlands?
Gusts work at anything on a roof that is loose or exposed. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. People normally call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- New damp or leaks inside
- Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
- Gutters pulled loose in the wind
- Damage from fallen branches or debris
Take a building like Crondall Primary School: on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- Their insurance cover
- How soon the report will arrive
- What follow-up you get after the report
What happens on the day
Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Older roofs in small places like Redlands can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
- We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there is access.
- We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
- The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
- You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.
Before the survey
- Check the loft hatch can be reached
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.
Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Redlands: your questions answered
Is Redlands within the area you cover?
Yes, Redlands is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Is Redlands in the area you cover?
Yes, Redlands is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Redlands as anywhere else.
Does someone need to be in?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when booking.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Should I go up on the roof to take photos?
Stay off the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
What wind speed counts as a storm?
It depends on your policy. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Check your policy wording.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.
