Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Shackleford

When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. Our report shows the damage in photos and says whether it looks like storm damage, wear and tear, or a mix. We’re not loss adjusters and can’t tell you if your claim will succeed. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. We survey gutters and fascias, flashings and slate and tile slopes, and the problems we are asked to look at most are flat roof edges peeled back and slipped or missing slates or tiles.

Being in a small place like Shackleford makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

How the survey works

Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. For a village or hamlet like Shackleford, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Before the survey

  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent

When you need someone else

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Areas we can’t see safely
  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • The outcome of a claim

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

What we look at

  • Gutters and fascias
  • Flashings
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Chimney stacks
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flat roofs

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roof coverings

On flat roofs, storms can lift edges and tear membranes. We record any damage and where it is.

Lead flashings

Flashings can lift or pull away from walls and chimneys in strong winds. We record which are loose or damaged.

Shackleford questions

Is Shackleford in the area you cover?

Yes, Shackleford is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

Is my home in Shackleford listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only if it’s safe. We check everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Can I check the roof after a storm?

Stay off the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

It depends on your policy. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Your policy document will say.

Tips from our surveys

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm

Once we’ve been, the findings are written up with photos. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. They can damage the roof in high winds.

DIY checks: what’s safe

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Leaks and storm damage in Shackleford

With Wanborough Manor about 2.1 miles north, Shackleford sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. Trees in and around Middlebriars Wood shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. If you own a rental within reach of Godalming station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.
