Storm damage roof report in Shipley Bridge: what you get
A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. It sets out what is damaged, with photographs, and what we think the likely cause is. It is yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We are not loss adjusters, and we cannot tell you whether a claim will succeed. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs and flashings, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are water coming in after the storm and gaps where slates or tiles have gone.
Many homes in small places like Shipley Bridge face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

What happens if roof problems are left?
It helps to get a record soon after the storm, while the damage is fresh. Later weather and temporary repairs can make it harder to see what happened. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Leaks and storm damage in Shipley Bridge
In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so check with the council.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Bartholomew, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. Homes near green spaces such as Worth Park Gardens can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Shipley Bridge means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition.

Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
- Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
- Don’t go onto the roof to take pictures
- Read your policy wording on storm damage
Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
After a storm, look at the roof from the street or garden. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or lifted ridges. Never climb onto the roof yourself.
What this survey cannot tell you
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- A decision on your insurance claim
- Acting for you with the insurer
- What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. What our survey covers.

How are storm damage reports priced?
Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. Bigger roofs are quoted on size and access. Repair costs aren’t included, so ask a roofer to quote.
What if the roof was already worn?
Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so it is clear what we found. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.
What wind speed counts as a storm?
It depends on your policy. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Check your policy wording.
How should I record storm damage myself?
Stay off the roof. Take photos from the ground or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
What you can safely check yourself
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
How the survey works
We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Older rural homes like those around Shipley Bridge can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
- We check the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
How to prepare
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
