Storm damage roof reports for Stanford homes and businesses

Before and after the survey

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm
  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Check how your policy defines a storm

Once we’ve been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

How a storm damage roof report works in Stanford

High winds usually affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Falling branches can cause damage too. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. If you’ve noticed slipped or missing slates or tiles and water coming in after the storm, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

For a small place like Stanford, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned in advance. It is useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

Stanford questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Stanford?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is the coastal weather around Stanford hard on roofs?

Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from the building owner or managing agent. We can only inspect what we are given access to.

Will you check the loft?

Where it is relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

How experienced are you?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Complain to your insurer first. If you’re still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we can’t predict the outcome.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

That is not something we can promise. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause.

What we’re asked to look at in Stanford

Strong winds lift loose or poorly fixed slates and tiles, ridge pieces and flashings. Driving rain then gets in through the gaps. People usually call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.

Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed one of these:

  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Damaged pots on the stack
  • Roofs hit by falling trees

If you live near a park like Sandling Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

What to check before booking

  • What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Are they insured for the work?

Leaks and storm damage in Stanford

The coast is about 3 miles or less from Stanford. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies, and the insurer decides the claim. Older houses across Kent frequently have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near All Saints Church, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. With Westenhanger Castle about 0.6 miles south-west, the area around Stanford has a long history. Older roofs around here can leak at old repairs as readily as at original details.

Stanford is about 3 miles north-west of Hythe, in Kent. Roofs in Stanford get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Kent. Our area takes in places right across Kent, large and small. Our Canterbury page covers surveys nearby.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Knowing whether older wear played a part helps you understand your position. We record storm damage and older defects, so you know what the roof shows. Older and listed buildings around Stanford may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Why us?

  • Plain-English reports with photos
  • 5,000+ surveys completed
  • Independent findings on the roof’s condition
  • Thermal imaging and drones used where they help

The survey, step by step

You don’t need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes an hour or two for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Cottages and farmhouses around Stanford often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.

  1. You let us know when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there is access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We check whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
