Storm damage roof reports for Staple homes and businesses

About our storm damage roof report in Staple

Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. We survey flat roofs, chimney stacks and flashings, and the problems we are asked to look at most are ridge tiles that have come loose and gaps where slates or tiles have gone.

Roofs in small places like Staple frequently stand in the open, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

How it works

We do not take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In a hamlet or village like Staple, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. We check the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Do you carry out roof surveys in Staple?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Staple as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is my home in Staple listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

What does a storm damage report cost?

Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. It does not include repair costs, so you’ll need a roofer’s quote for those.

Do I need to be at home?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

How do I book a survey in Staple?

It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.

Useful tips for Staple property owners

Small things make a difference. Our tips:

  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
  • Take photos of stains and damp inside
  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs

Once we’ve been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

Storm damage roof reports around Staple

With Goodnestone Park about 1.9 miles south-west, Staple sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

For landlords with property near Adisham station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St James, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A clear, independent record helps you explain the damage to your insurer. It records the damage and what seems to have caused it, so you’re not relying only on your own photos. Older cottages and farmhouses around Staple can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Roof by roof

Lead flashings

Wind can peel back flashings at abutments and stacks. Loose or damaged flashings are photographed and noted.

Slate roofs

Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. We photograph and describe each one.

When you need someone else

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
  • A price for the repairs

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.
