Storm damage roof reports for Tide Mills homes and businesses

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Tide Mills

We inspect the roof from wherever it can be seen safely: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there’s access, and the roof itself where that’s safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. We note any part we couldn’t see. You get a written report with photos to give to your insurer. We’re often asked to look into damaged flat roof membrane and lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles, across flashings, flat roofs and slate and tile slopes.

Being in a small place like Tide Mills makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned in advance. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Tide Mills

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Tide Mills, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. In a coastal gale, rain is driven sideways into laps, verges and flashings, while salt slowly corrodes metal fixings and flashings. Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

Alfriston Clergy House lies about 4.1 miles north-east, so building around Tide Mills goes back a long way. Older roofs in the area may have lead flashings, valleys and gutters that have been patched many times. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as UTC@Harbourside, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.

Tide Mills is about 1 mile south-east of Newhaven, in East Sussex. Surveys in Tide Mills work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. We cover towns and villages across East Sussex. Brighton is in our area too.

Common questions in Tide Mills

Will you come out to Tide Mills?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Tide Mills?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

How many surveys have you done?

We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

How strong does the wind have to be for a storm claim?

It depends on your policy. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Your policy document will say.

Can I check the roof after a storm?

Stay off the roof. Take photos from the ground or from windows. Record the date and any damage inside as well.

Useful tips for Tide Mills property owners

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:

  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
  • Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Keep receipts for any emergency work

If a claim is declined and you disagree, the first step is a complaint to the insurer. If that does not resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

What this survey can’t tell you

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • A decision on your insurance claim
  • Areas we can’t see safely
  • Negotiating a claim settlement

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we look at

  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs

How it works

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos, emailed to you. As for time on site, most surveys take between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Cottages and farmhouses around Tide Mills frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. We look at the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Before we arrive

  • If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches

Advice

Should I look at the roof myself first?

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

When to book a survey in Tide Mills

Storms do not only affect pitched roofs. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. Our report covers flat and pitched roofs.

Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed one of these:

  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Flat roof edges peeled back
  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof

Hotels and guest houses near Tide Mills can’t easily close rooms for a leak, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
