Before and after the survey

Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:

  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • File receipts for anything you pay for

If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. They can damage the roof in high winds.

About our storm damage roof report in Troy Town

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from ground level or a window, and never climb up. Emergency temporary protection, like covering an opening, is a job for a roofer. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. We survey ridges and hips, chimney stacks and slate and tile slopes, and people most often book us about damaged ridges and hips and broken or displaced guttering.

For a small place like Troy Town, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned beforehand. It’s useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Once the storm has passed, damage that looked minor can let water in for months. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is usually better. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

FAQs for Troy Town

Is Troy Town within the area you cover?

Yes. Troy Town is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Is my home in Troy Town listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

How long will you be at the property?

Expect it to take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Only from ground level or from windows. Don’t use a ladder or go onto the roof. Binoculars can help you see damage from below, and we’ll record the rest.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. If it is safe, photograph the damage before it is covered. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

It varies by policy. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but check your own wording.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.

The survey, step by step

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Cottages and farmhouses around Troy Town often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We record what we can see of the fixings.

Honest limits

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • Negotiating a claim settlement

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flashings
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Chimney stacks
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flat roofs
  • Gutters and fascias

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
