Underriver Storm Damage Roof Report
Find out the condition of the roof at your property in Underriver. We visit on weekdays and at weekends.
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Lead lifted at abutments
- Damaged pots on the stack
How it works
You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Older rural homes like those around Underriver can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- You receive the written report with photos.
How to prepare
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Check we can get to the back of the property
- Jot down any questions you want answered

How a storm damage roof report works in Underriver
A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. You get a written report with photos by email. It doesn’t price the repairs, so you’ll need a roofer’s quote for that. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. What you get is an independent record of the damage and what seems to have caused it. We survey flashings, flat roofs and chimney stacks, and people most often book us about cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind and water coming in after the storm.
Many homes in small places like Underriver face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Tips that help
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Photograph the damage safely from below
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
- Read your policy wording on storm damage
- Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
Your insurer may send a loss adjuster to look at the damage. Our report gives you an independent record alongside theirs.
Check the roof from the ground after strong winds. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or lifted ridges. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

Common roof problems in Underriver
A storm often finds a roof’s existing weak spots. Corroded nails on slate roofs, worn mortar on ridges and old flashings can all give way. Our report notes both the storm damage and any older wear.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Damaged gutters and fascias
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Damaged flat roof membrane
- Holes or cracks caused by debris
Trees in and around Knole Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- What the report includes, and whether it has photos
- Their insurance cover
What a storm damage roof report does not cover
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Keep these in mind:
- Areas we can’t see safely
- A decision on your insurance claim
- A price for the repairs

FAQs for Underriver
Is my home in Underriver listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Is Underriver within the area you cover?
Yes. Underriver is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
Are you loss adjusters?
No. We are not loss adjusters and do not act for you with the insurer. We provide an independent record of the roof for you to send to your insurer.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach.
Storm damage roof reports in Underriver: local notes
About 1.6 miles north-west lies Knole House, a reminder of how long the area around Underriver has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles hung on pegs through two holes, are typical of older Kent buildings. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.
Take a building like Sevenoaks Preparatory School: water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. Landlords with a home close to Hildenborough station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.
Underriver is about 3 miles south-east of Sevenoaks, in Kent. We survey roofs in Underriver and the rest of Kent, as part of our work across London and the South East. We cover towns and villages across Kent. Our Maidstone page covers surveys nearby.

Checking the roof from the ground
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Why get it checked now?
Leaving storm damage can let water into the roof space and rooms below. That can add to the damage and make it harder to separate from the storm. Emergency temporary protection should be arranged with a roofer. In a small place like Underriver, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
