Storm damage roof report in Wandsworth

Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. If you’re worried about loose or broken chimney pots and cowls and slipped or missing slates or tiles, we can find out what’s behind it, on ridges and hips, flashings and flat roofs alike.

In a London flat, water can travel some way before it shows. That makes the source hard to pin down, and finding it matters for whoever has to deal with it. We check what we are given access to in Wandsworth, inside and out. Let us know when the water shows, and in what kind of weather.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to.

Different roofs, different checks

Slate roofs

After strong winds, we frequently see cracked and slipped slates. We photograph and describe each one.

Chimney stacks

Wind can pull the flashings away from a chimney. We photograph any we find.

What you can safely check yourself

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Questions from Wandsworth

Is Wandsworth in the area you cover?

Yes, Wandsworth is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

How do I find out if my home in Wandsworth is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

The first step is a complaint to your insurer. If you are still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we can’t say how it will turn out.

How long will you be at the property?

Most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. The report follows by email.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you as you book.

Is wear and tear covered by insurance?

Insurers normally exclude wear and tear. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. Your insurer decides the claim.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.

Wandsworth roofs and the weather

The wider area around Wandsworth has a long history of building, with Fulham Palace about 1.5 miles north-west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Many homes in inner London are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, often with Welsh slate roofs. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Southside Wandsworth, water through a ceiling can damage stock and close a sales floor, so the source needs finding fast. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Anne's Church, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. Homes near green spaces such as King George's Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

The survey, step by step

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Surveys in Wandsworth can be booked for any day of the week. It helps if you can point us to a visitor permit or a nearby bay, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they often give the best view of a rear addition.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Advice

When you need someone else

It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • A decision on your insurance claim
  • Areas we can’t see safely

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Flat roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flashings
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Ridges and hips
  • Slate and tile slopes

How we price storm damage roof reports

All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

What to tell us when you contact us

You do not need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to let us know:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to call 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.

Tips from our surveys

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • Photograph the damage safely from below

The report is emailed to you, and you decide what to send to your insurer. It’s your record to use.

Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. They can damage the roof in high winds.
