Drone roof survey in Wandsworth
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. If you’ve noticed slipped or missing slates on a high roof and wind damage high on the roof, we can find out what’s behind it, on tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors alike.
London’s roofs are frequently hard to see from the street: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in Wandsworth as anywhere. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How the survey works
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photos. As for time on site, it usually takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. For a visit in Wandsworth, parking and access are the things to plan: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at what can be seen safely from ground level, windows, the loft and, where it is safe, the roof itself.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Keep pets in another room

Honest limits
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe

Roofs we survey in Wandsworth
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Fragile roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
When to book a survey in Wandsworth
Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. We fly from ground level and bring the camera close to the roof.
A survey can pick up problems like:
- Standing water on a flat roof
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
The streets around a church such as St Anne's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Questions to ask before you book
- What experience they bring
- What the survey won’t cover
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
Why get it checked now?
With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. You can show exactly where the problem is, which helps when you ask for quotes. In a London terrace or conversion, a roof defect rarely stays your problem alone: a blocked parapet gutter or slipped slate can let water into the flat below or the house next door. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.
Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You’ll know the price for the job before booking.

Practical tips
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
File the report and photos with your home documents. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys.
Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
Wandsworth questions
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Wandsworth?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Wandsworth is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. Before any flight there, we ask the heliport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it is given. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Wandsworth?
Sometimes, yes. If Wandsworth has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer, and a driveway is even better.
How soon will I get the report?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies.
What does the report include?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. The most urgent items are made clear.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
How long is the visit?
It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. You’ll then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.

Before any flight there, we ask the heliport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it is given. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. How the survey changes by roof type
Steep slate and tile slopes
Walking on fragile coverings can break them. A drone avoids that, so the survey doesn’t add damage.
Ridges and hips
Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.
