Southfields questions

Can parking be tricky for a visit in Southfields?

Parking in Southfields, as in most of London, takes a little planning: a visitor permit or a bay close to the door helps a lot, so mention what’s available when you book.

How do I find out if my home in Southfields is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Just say which days work for you.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.

Does someone need to be in?

Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

How experienced are you?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.

Drone roof survey in Southfields

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. A drone inspection, where applicable, is also part of our Premium Survey, along with structural analysis, a same-day report and an in-person consultation. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. If a drone will not help on your roof, we’ll say so. You get a written report with the close-up photos from the flight. If you’re worried about wind damage high on the roof and chimney tops in poor condition, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Flying in London takes more checking than most places: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Before a drone goes up in Southfields, the address is checked against all of them, and where permission is needed, the flight waits for it.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What you can safely check yourself

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. They show the location and extent of each defect. Any roof job in Southfields means planning around parking, neighbours and access. That’s a good reason to find problems early, while there’s time to plan, rather than in a rush after a leak.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Prices start from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Take a look at what a roof survey costs and what we found on two real jobs.

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Felt frequently lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. We record the signs of age we can see.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Walking on fragile coverings can break them. A drone avoids that, so the survey does not add damage.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Southfields

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Larger roofs take longer.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends, which can make access easier.

Flying and imaging in Southfields

The flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea covers Southfields, or comes right up to its edge. We ask the heliport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it is given. Many homes in inner London are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, often with Welsh slate roofs. From the street you may see only a parapet, with a butterfly roof and a valley gutter behind it draining to the back. Shared chimney stacks, party-wall upstands and lead work come with this kind of house. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

Fulham Palace lies about 1.9 miles north-west, so building around Southfields goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself. Parking in Southfields, as in most of London, takes a little planning: let us know about parking bays, permits or a driveway when you book, as a space near the door cannot be promised. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Southside Wandsworth, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

Honest limits

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • Flights in high wind or heavy rain
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

What this survey covers

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs

What we do, step by step

You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. For a visit in Southfields, parking and access are the things to plan: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at what can be seen safely from the ground, windows, the loft and, where it’s safe, the roof itself.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
