Thermal roof survey in Southfields

A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. It’s important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so findings are checked with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. We survey loft conversions, commercial roofs and pitched roof slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are heat escaping through the roof and damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys.

London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in Southfields, the address is checked against all of them, and permission is never taken for granted.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. You will see the good as well as the bad.

How it works

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a photo-illustrated written report. On timing, it usually takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In Southfields, visits are available on weekdays and at weekends. London parking is often by permit or pay-and-display, so it helps to know what’s near you, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. A back bedroom window can be the best vantage point for a rear addition, so we may ask to use one.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Before the survey

  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear

Advice

FAQs for Southfields

How do I find out if my home in Southfields is listed?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is drone flying allowed in Southfields?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Southfields is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. We ask the heliport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it is given. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.

What’s in the report?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. Points are put by urgency where it matters.

What insurance do you have?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?

It often helps show where to look. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera can’t confirm water on its own.

What conditions are best for thermal imaging?

The weather makes a real difference. It works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind. Rain and strong wind can make the images less clear, so we talk through the forecast when you book.

Is Southfields in your area?

Yes, we do. Southfields is part of the area we cover.

Flying and imaging in Southfields

About 1.9 miles north-west lies Fulham Palace, a reminder of how long the area around Southfields has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces frequently have Welsh slate roofs. Behind many of their parapets sit butterfly roofs and valley gutters that cannot be seen from the pavement. If your home in Southfields is one of them, lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are part of the picture too. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Floreat Wandsworth Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. For businesses in and around places like Southside Wandsworth, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

Roof by roof

Pitched slate and tile roofs

From inside the loft, the camera can help with damp around chimneys, valleys and roof windows. We check any patterns with moisture readings.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. The camera can help show where to look.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Southfields?

People often book a thermal survey when a damp patch has no obvious cause. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
  • Wet areas near outlets and upstands
  • Wet insulation beneath the membrane
  • Cold spots on ceilings under the roof

Take an older house close to St John the Divine: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What the survey will not cover
  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • How soon the report will arrive

Tips that help

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Talk to us about the weather when booking
  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks

Once we’ve been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. We explain what each image may mean, with our recommendations. Premium reports are sent the same day.

Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water doesn’t sit on the roof. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.

Honest limits

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
  • An energy rating for the building

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.
