About our storm damage roof report in Woolston
Wear and tear is normally excluded from home insurance. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. We note signs of each: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We give an honest view of what we see. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. If you’ve noticed slipped or missing slates or tiles and loose or torn flashings, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on ridges and hips, gutters and fascias and chimney stacks alike.
Chimney stacks on older houses around places like Woolston can let water in, at the flashings, the pointing or the mortar round the pots. Damp in a chimney breast can have more than one cause, so it isn’t always obvious where it starts. The stack, its flashings and the loft space beside it are all worth checking.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Before temporary repairs, photograph the damage from the ground if it is safe. Those photos show the damage as it was. Blocked gutters on homes around Woolston overflow and soak walls. It is easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.

- Estimates of repair costs
- What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes

Tips that help
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
- Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
- Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it’s safe to do so
The insurer might appoint a loss adjuster. Our report gives you an independent record alongside theirs.
Check the roof from ground level after strong winds. With binoculars, you can often spot problems without climbing. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window

What we do, step by step
You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Being in a smaller place like Woolston doesn’t change how the visit works: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
- We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
- We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
- We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
- The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Check the loft hatch can be reached

Woolston roofs and the weather
Woolston is within about 1 mile of the coast. What counts as a storm is set by each policy, frequently gusts of around 55 mph, and the insurer makes the decision. About 1.3 miles west lies Medieval Merchant's House, a reminder of how long the area around Woolston has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
Trees in and around Westwood Woodland Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. Anyone responsible for a site like Woolston Infant School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. For businesses in and around places such as Westquay, water through a ceiling can damage stock and close a sales floor, so the source needs finding fast.
Woolston is about 2 miles south-east of Southampton, in Southampton. Whether the building in Woolston is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed. Across Southampton, we cover Woolston.

Can I check my roof myself?
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

Common questions in Woolston
Is Woolston within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Is the coastal weather around Woolston hard on roofs?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.
Will you deal with the insurance company for me?
No. Our report is an independent record for you to use. Your insurer may appoint its own loss adjuster.
Will you check the loft?
If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. The loft space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
