- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- How big the roof is
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.
What we need to know
When you call or email, these details help:
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- What’s prompted the survey
- Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
How a storm damage roof report works in Shirley
The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: whether there were storm conditions around the date, whether the damage fits a storm, and whether the storm was the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. You or your insurer can check the weather for the date. If you’re worried about gaps where slates or tiles have gone and damage from fallen branches or debris, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Houses in smaller places like Shirley can stand more in the open, where driving rain gets into any gap at a ridge, verge or flashing. A leak that only appears in certain weather often points to an exposed detail. Tell us when it happens when you contact us. The gutters on the most exposed side can overflow too.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Shirley: your questions answered
Is Shirley within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
How do I find out if my home in Shirley is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll explain what’s needed.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Are you loss adjusters?
No. Our report is an independent record for you to use. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
Do I need to be at home?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
When you need someone else
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- A price for the repairs
- Negotiating a claim settlement
- The outcome of a claim
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Flashings
- Chimney stacks
- Gutters and fascias
- Slate and tile slopes
- Ridges and hips
- Flat roofs
What we do, step by step
We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. All told, expect between one and two hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Shirley, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.
- You let us know when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
- We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there is access.
- The damage is recorded with photographs, area by area.
- We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
- You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.
Getting ready for the survey
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent

Advice
Why get it checked now?
If the damage is partly wear and tear, it’s better to know. Our report gives an honest view of both, so there are no surprises later. Blocked gutters on homes around Shirley overflow and soak walls, especially where trees overhang. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.
To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Before and after the survey
A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
- Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
- Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
You will need a roofer’s quote for the repairs. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.
After a storm, look at the roof from the street or garden. With binoculars, you can often spot problems without climbing. Never climb onto the roof yourself.
For landlords and managing agents
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Larger roofs take longer.
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.
Storm damage roof reports around Shirley
Shirley lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain finds any gap they leave. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.
If you live near a park such as St James' Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. For landlords with property near Millbrook (Hants) station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. If you look after a building like Wordsworth Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.
