Woolston Thermal Roof Survey
We take a careful look at the roof at your property in Woolston, and put it all in a photo-illustrated written report.
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
Drones, thermal imaging and Woolston roofs
Woolston lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Woolston, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it pays to find faults before guests do. If you look after a building such as Woolston Infant School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Woolston is about 2 miles south-east of Southampton, in Southampton. From houses to flats and shops in Woolston, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Woolston is one of the towns and villages in Southampton where we work for thermal roof surveys.
Thermal roof surveys in SO19 and SO14 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We cover properties on Oak Road, Lake Road and Glen Road. Woolston is on the A3025, which makes it simple to reach. If you are just outside Woolston, we cover Weston (1 mile south-east), Netley (2 miles south-east), Butlocks Heath (2 miles south-east), Hound (2 miles south-east) and Old Netley (2 miles east). Within a short drive, we also cover Shirley (3 miles north-west), Regents Park (3 miles north-west), Townhill Park (3 miles north), Chartwell Green (3 miles north-east), Maybush (4 miles north-west) and Coxford (4 miles north-west).

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Woolston
Thermal imaging is a useful tool, but it has limits. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. That is why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding can’t be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. If you’ve noticed thin or uneven insulation in the roof and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on ceilings below the roof, commercial roofs and insulated roof spaces alike.
Around Woolston, a good many roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. The forecast decides the day. Close-up images frequently show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from ground level.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

What you can safely check yourself
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Different roofs, different checks
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
On felt and asphalt flat roofs, wet insulation can show as a temperature difference across the surface. We check those patches with moisture readings.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Many single-ply and EPDM roofs sit on insulation boards. Wet boards can show as temperature differences on the images.
Woolston questions
Is Woolston within the area you cover?
Yes, Woolston is covered. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Is drone flying allowed in Woolston?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Woolston is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around Southampton Airport. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
What does a thermal roof survey show?
The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Differences can suggest wet areas, missing insulation or heat loss, which we then check with moisture readings.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

For landlords and managing agents
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.
What we do, step by step
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. A visit to Woolston is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed in advance. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. Tell us about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.
- You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Preparing for the visit
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
Booking a survey

Advice
Leave it or get it looked at?
Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. Arranging work in a smaller place like Woolston is easier with notice than in an emergency. A survey gives you that notice.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

What we are asked to look at in Woolston
Some buyers want extra detail before they commit to a purchase. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report, which helps when timescales are tight.
We are often asked to look at:
- Cold areas below the roof
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Stains that keep coming back
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
Historic houses such as Medieval Merchant's House, about 1.3 miles west, show how far back building around Woolston goes. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.
What to check before booking
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
