Thermal Roof Survey in Albourne
Wondering about the roof at a property in Albourne? You can book a thermal roof survey in Albourne and across West Sussex.
- Stains that keep coming back
- Missing or slipped insulation
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
What a thermal roof survey does not cover
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Albourne
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. It’s useful to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast as you book, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. We survey pitched roof slopes, commercial roofs and flat roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and cold areas below the roof.
Somewhere as small as Albourne, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
After the visit, you get a written report with photos, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What we do, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Albourne can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
- You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.

Leave it or get it looked at?
The longer moisture sits in a roof, the more it can affect timbers and finishes below. Looking now, while the damage may still be limited, keeps more options open. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Albourne, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Albourne
Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are often invisible from outside. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Stains that keep coming back
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
Anyone responsible for a site like Albourne CofE Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Questions to ask before you book
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Is VAT included in the price?
- What insurance they carry
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
Flying and imaging in Albourne
Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask.
The streets around a church like The Parish Church of St Bartholomew are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed beforehand. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends, which can make access easier.
How the survey changes by roof type
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Damp at junctions can be hard to see by eye. We combine a close visual check with the thermal images.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Built-up felt and asphalt roofs can hide trapped water for a long time. Thermal imaging helps suggest where it is, given suitable conditions on the day.

How long is the visit?
Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take about 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. The written report follows by email.
