About our thermal roof survey in Ashburton
A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. That’s why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. The report is clear about what the images show and what they do not. If a finding cannot be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. If you’ve noticed thin or uneven insulation in the roof and stains that keep coming back, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Flying in London takes more checking than most places: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Before a drone goes up in Ashburton, the address is checked against all of them, and permission is never taken for granted.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.
What we look at
- Loft conversions
- Commercial roofs
- Flat roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Ceilings below the roof
- Pitched roof slopes
Checking the roof from ground level
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
When to book a survey in Ashburton
Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
If you run a business near Whitgift Centre, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from above or with a thermal imager.
What to check before booking
- What happens after the report arrives
- Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
- Their report turnaround times
- Are they insured for the work?

Drones, thermal imaging and Ashburton roofs
Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
Take a building like St Thomas Becket Catholic Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. For a London address like Ashburton, it helps to know about controlled parking before the day.

Roof by roof
Loft insulation
Insulation often gets moved during work in the loft. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Many single-ply and EPDM roofs sit on insulation boards. Wet boards can show as temperature differences on the images.
Tips that help
Small things make a difference. Some pointers:
- Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.
Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof in suitable weather.
FAQs for Ashburton
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Ashburton?
It rarely stops a survey, but it is worth planning. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Ashburton?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.
Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?
It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone can’t prove a leak.
Are you insured?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
What happens next?
You’ll get the report by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
What happens on the day
We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. The survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is frequently on a shared landing. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Otherwise, the visit in Ashburton runs like any other.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Getting ready for the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
