Thermal imaging roof survey in Balmerlawn, Hampshire
Not sure what state the roof is in? We carry out thermal roof surveys in Balmerlawn and across Hampshire.
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Missing or slipped insulation
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
Useful tips for Balmerlawn property owners
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
Where a pattern cannot be confirmed, the report says what could help, for example electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.
Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof in suitable weather.
Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Balmerlawn
Your report sets out the thermal images alongside ordinary photographs, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. Premium reports are sent the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. A follow-up 12 months later is included too. We are often asked to look into damp around roof outlets and upstands and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, on ceilings below the roof, pitched roof slopes and insulated roof spaces.
Somewhere as small as Balmerlawn, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we can’t see
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- An energy rating for the building
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- Proving moisture from the images alone

Balmerlawn questions
How do I find out if my home in Balmerlawn is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you cover smaller places like Balmerlawn?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it’s applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
How many surveys have you done?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.
Different roofs, different checks
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Thermal images of a pitched roof can still show heat loss patterns and some damp areas. We explain what can and can’t be read from them.
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Damp at junctions can be hard to see by eye. We combine a close visual check with the thermal images.
What happens on the day
There is not much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, like stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a small place like Balmerlawn, access is typically the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

What we’re asked to look at in Balmerlawn
On big commercial and residential flat roofs, thermal imaging helps owners plan. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so moisture readings can be targeted.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
Beaulieu Palace House, about 4.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Balmerlawn. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself.
Questions to ask before you book
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- What the survey won’t cover
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs

Checking the roof from ground level
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
What a thermal roof survey looks like in Balmerlawn
Balmerlawn is within about 5 miles of the coast, and coastal wind can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
Anyone responsible for a site like Brockenhurst Church of England Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Nicholas, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.
