Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Belmont
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. It helps to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, a strong wind or heavy cloud can make the images less clear. We talk through the forecast when you book, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. Common reasons to book are areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and leaks far from where the stain appears, on flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and pitched roof slopes.
Places like Belmont can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Belmont: your questions answered
Do you carry out roof surveys in Belmont?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Belmont is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Belmont?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
How long will you be at the property?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take between one and two hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. The report is sent afterwards by email.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll explain what’s needed.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. That is why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
What happens after the survey?
You’ll get the report by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Do I need to be at home?
Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when booking.
What we are asked to look at in Belmont
After a repair, some owners want to know whether the roof has dried out. Thermal images and moisture readings can suggest whether moisture is still trapped, given suitable conditions on the day.
We’re often asked to look at:
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Water that travels before it shows
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
Nonsuch Mansion, about 1.5 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Belmont. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What exactly goes into their report
- Their insurance cover
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- Whether the price includes VAT
The survey, step by step
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photos go into the written report. It normally takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Being in a smaller place like Belmont does not change how the visit works: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. It’s useful to show us anything you’ve already noticed.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Preparing for the visit
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Leave side gates unlocked

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Flying and imaging in Belmont
If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. In Surrey, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
If you run a business near The Ashley Centre, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see by drone or thermal camera. Take an older house close to Church of St John: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Roof by roof
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP roofs are laid over timber boards, so trapped moisture can affect the deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Junctions where roofs meet walls, parapets and valleys are common places for water to get in. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.
Honest limits
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.
