Thermal roof survey in Clapham: what you get
Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We survey commercial roofs, pitched roof slopes and flat roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are damp patches with no obvious cause and missing or slipped insulation.
London roofs sit shoulder to shoulder in terraces and blocks, so privacy and neighbours matter as much as the view. We take care to focus on the roof we’ve been asked to look at. Mention access, height and anything unusual about the building when you book. The extra view helps most on steep slopes, tall stacks and rear additions.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photo. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. From the street, a London terrace typically shows only its front slope or parapet, so in Clapham we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, tell us who can let us into the shared parts.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.

Roof by roof
Loft insulation
From inside the loft, thermal imaging can show gaps in insulation and cold spots. We look where there’s safe access.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.
Why act early in Clapham
A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so you know where to put things right. In a London terrace or conversion, a roof defect rarely stays your problem alone: a blocked parapet gutter or slipped slate can let water into the flat below or the house next door. Dealing with it early is far less disruptive.

FAQs for Clapham
Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Clapham?
Sometimes, yes. If Clapham has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer, and a driveway is even better.
How do I find out if my home in Clapham is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.
Do you work in Clapham?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, Clapham included.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable.
How long is the visit?
Expect it to take about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. You will then get the report by email.
Does the weather affect a thermal survey?
The results depend on the weather. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.
Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Clapham
Some buyers want extra detail before they commit to a purchase. The Premium Survey brings thermal imaging and a drone inspection where applicable, with a report the same day, which suits a purchase that’s moving quickly.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Water that travels before it shows
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
If you live in an older home near St Paul's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Before booking any roof surveyor

Thermal roof surveys around Clapham
The wider area around Clapham has a long history of building, with Carlyle's House about 1.9 miles north-west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Many homes in inner London are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, often with Welsh slate roofs. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. Lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are typical of these houses, if yours is one of them. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
