What we are asked to look at in Crosspost

Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are frequently invisible from outside. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Damp around chimneys and parapets
  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Stains that keep coming back

If you look after a building such as Bolney CofE Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

What a good roof survey covers

How a thermal roof survey works in Crosspost

A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. Typical surveys look at damp around roof outlets and upstands and damp that repairs haven’t cured, on commercial roofs, loft conversions and insulated roof spaces.

In a small place like Crosspost, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover

It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • An energy rating for the building
  • Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we look at

  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Commercial roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Insulated roof spaces

How it works

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Around Crosspost, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
  2. We check the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent

How to book

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Advice

Checking the roof from the ground

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Airspace, weather and Crosspost roofs

With Ockenden Manor about 3.1 miles north-east, Crosspost sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Take an older house close to St Mary Magdalene's Church: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Crosspost is about 4 miles north-west of Burgess Hill, in West Sussex. Anywhere in Crosspost, we can carry out thermal roof surveys at your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Across West Sussex, we cover Crosspost and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Crawley page.

Surveys in RH17 are booked the same way as anywhere else. That includes homes and businesses on Cowfold Road and Chapel Road and the roads around them. Practical tips

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing
  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive

We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. That way you know how much weight to give each finding.

After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry, when the conditions are suitable.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Crosspost

A damp patch that keeps coming back usually has a cause that hasn’t been found. Combining the camera with moisture readings can help find it, rather than more guesswork. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Crosspost questions

How do I find out if my home in Crosspost is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Crosspost?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Crosspost as anywhere else.

How fast do I get the report?

That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?

It is a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. Where it cannot be pinned down, the report suggests a next step, like electronic leak detection.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it applies and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.

What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?

The camera records how the surface temperature varies. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat loss. Findings are checked with moisture readings.

How do I arrange a thermal roof survey in Crosspost?

To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what you’d like to know. We will confirm the price and agree a day with you.
