Thermal roof survey in Further Quarter
Thermal imaging is a useful tool, but it has limits. Sun, shade, reflective surfaces and wind can all change what the camera shows. That’s why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. The report is clear about what the images show and what they don’t. If a finding cannot be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. Common reasons to book are damp that repairs haven’t cured and damp around chimneys and parapets, on ceilings below the roof, insulated roof spaces and loft conversions.
In a village or hamlet like Further Quarter, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned in advance. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

DIY checks: what’s safe
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Further Quarter
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, with the most urgent items set out first.

Other services in Further Quarter
Different roofs, different checks
Pitched slate and tile roofs
On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We take that into account and check findings with moisture readings.
Thermal roof surveys in Further Quarter: local notes
If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
Whether the property is in Further Quarter itself or nearby, the inspection covers whatever is safely visible, inside and out. Whatever the street in Further Quarter, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.

Further Quarter: your questions answered
Do you carry out roof surveys in Further Quarter?
Yes, Further Quarter is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Further Quarter as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How do I find out if my home in Further Quarter is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations, but the report shows where to look more closely.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. We check the parts we’re given access to.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.
What this survey cannot tell you
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

What we do, step by step
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, from ground level, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. The survey usually takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Further Quarter often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
