Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Hampers Green

Is Hampers Green in the area you cover?

Yes, Hampers Green is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

How do I find out if my home in Hampers Green is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

Will I get photos?

Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it doesn’t include calculations. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it’s applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Thermal roof survey in Hampers Green: what you get

A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp is not obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings don’t rely on the camera alone. If you are worried about water that travels before it shows and missing or slipped insulation, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on pitched roof slopes, commercial roofs and ceilings below the roof alike.

Older buildings in small places like Hampers Green may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Hampers Green

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photos included.

Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Tell us about it as you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

Before and after the survey

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
  • Keep a record of when stains appear
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks

You also get an in-person consultation with a Premium Survey, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. There’s a 12-month follow-up too.

Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.

Airspace, weather and Hampers Green roofs

Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

Petworth House, about 0.6 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Hampers Green. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. Anyone responsible for a site like Petworth Cof E Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near The Church of St Mary the Virgin, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Hampers Green is one of the towns and villages in West Sussex we cover for thermal roof surveys. Guildford is in our area too.

What you can safely check yourself

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

What we cannot see

Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • The condition of timbers we can’t see
  • Proving moisture from the images alone
  • An energy rating for the building

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Flat roofs
  • Commercial roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Loft conversions

How it works

We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older roofs in small places like Hampers Green can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

What happens if roof problems are left?

Buyers get extra information from thermal images that the eye can miss. Hidden problems found before exchange can be raised with the seller or agent. Older and listed buildings around Hampers Green may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.
