Thermal imaging roof survey in Hassocks, West Sussex
Thermal imaging to find moisture and heat loss patterns in a roof in Hassocks, carried out by an experienced roof surveyor. Every survey comes with a written report and photos.
- Heat escaping through the roof
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- A structural engineer’s assessment

About our thermal roof survey in Hassocks
Wet insulation under a flat roof covering holds heat for longer than dry. That means a wet area can show up as a different temperature from the rest of the roof. It helps us see how far water may have spread under the covering, which is hard to judge by eye. We then check those areas with moisture readings. We survey pitched roof slopes, loft conversions and commercial roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are thin or uneven insulation in the roof and stains that keep coming back.
In smaller places like Hassocks, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. The parts you cannot see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images frequently show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from ground level.
We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
Do you need a thermal roof survey in Hassocks?
People often book a thermal survey when a damp patch has no obvious cause. A leak may start well away from where the stain appears. The camera helps narrow the search.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Francis of Assisi, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- Will the report include photos?
- When you will get the report
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?

What insurance do you have?
We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. An in-person consultation and a follow-up 12 months later are included too. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size.
What’s in the report?
A written report with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.
Drones, thermal imaging and Hassocks roofs
Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If you look after a building like Hassocks Infant School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Hassocks
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out with the most urgent first where relevant.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is often to open up the roof. That helps you and your roofer decide what really needs replacing. In an older home around Hassocks, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.

How the survey works
It’s useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Hassocks is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from the ground and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
